“The most beautiful and stirring adventure that can happen to you is the personal meeting with Jesus, who is the only one who gives real meaning to our lives.”

- St. John Paul II

Confirmation

The Faith Formation program at St. Mary’s is here to support you in your irreplaceable role as parents and guardians in your child’s faith formation. We are here to help support the solemn promises you made before God the day of their baptism.

Our goal is to provide you with the support and means necessary to raise your children as strong Catholics in today's world.

With grateful hearts over 100 students received the Sacrament of Confirmation in 2023.

Registration Guidelines

Please read carefully.

To be admitted to the Confirmation Program (2023-24),

please complete the following

1) you have registered your child through the Religious Education Registration Form, and

2) Attend the first day of call on September 24th from 10- 11:30 am in the Parish Center

3) Attend the parent meeting with Will Kalenius to learn more about what is required to receive the Sacrament of Confimation.

Note on age: The Archdiocese of Portland has lowered the age of Confirmation to the 7th grade (12 years of age). This program is most suited to those of this age group, but those in 8th through 12th grade are also encouraged to register. Those who are not in grade school are encouraged to attend the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program at our parish.

Who can be a sponsor?

The role of sponsor in the Rite of Confirmation mirrors that of the godparent in baptism—to help the parents raise their child in the faith. Thus, the sponsor must be a practicing Catholic other than the candidate’s parents or siblings (unless the sibling is an adult). The role of sponsor also serves as a connection between the candidate’s family and the wider parish community. The candidate and parents are highly advised to select a sponsor who is an active member of our parish. If you wish to select a sponsor who is not an active member of St. Mary in Corvallis, please email our youth minister to discuss this. The first choice of sponsor should be one of the godparents if they still belong to the parish. Christian initiation is initiation into a community, thus we would advise those who aren’t familiar with any potential sponsor to participate in parish-sponsored events to find someone suitable—also feel free to email our youth minister for ideas on integrating into the parish community.

My child is in the 7th grade or above, but has not yet received Baptism, First Communion, or First Reconciliation, what do I do?

If your child is in 7th grade or above, but has not yet received either Baptism, First Reconciliation, or First Communion, register them through the Religious Education Registration form and have them attend the Pre-Confirmation program (include “Pre-Confirmation” in the notes)—the candidate will then be prepared to attend the Confirmation program in the following year.

Does St. Mary have a youth group? Who should I reach out to?

Yes, we have two youth groups for the 2023-4 school year: Junior Youth Group for grades 7-9 and Senior Youth Group for grades 10-12. For the Junior group, contact Lizzie Dodge for more information. For the Senior group, contact Sean Akroyd for more information.
